Alfa has given its 186mph Giulia super saloon more aero and a mad rear wing
Welcome back, old friend: meet the Quadrifoglio Luna Rossa
Things That Sound Better In Italian, Part 39: the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Luna Rossa. It’s a new limited edition of one of Top Gear’s very favourite V6-engined super saloons, and it’s a bit more than a new set of wheels and decals.
Because this Luna Rossa – ‘red moon’, of course – features a new low drag aerodynamic kit made out of carbon fibre (wonder if that’ll catch on) that Alfa reckons generates five times more downforce than the regular Giulia Quad.
So, at 186mph - it's top speed - this Luna Rossa is able to generate 140kg of downforce. That’s… sticky. It’s achieved via new appendages on the front bumper, new profiles on the bottom of the bodywork, newly sculpted side skirts, and that “spectacular” rear wing.
Certainly looks funky. It’s a ‘dual profile’ wing supported by two central pylons and whose design is inspired by the equally funky Luna Rossa AC75, which is a very fast hydrofoil.
“Alfa Romeo has reinterpreted this language, turning the foil section upside down to generate opposing forces: not to fly, but to force the car down onto the tarmac with extraordinary efficiency,” said Alfa. Be cool if it could fly, though.
That’s about it for the technical content – the brilliant 2.9-litre turbo V6 is as before, so in excess of 513 horsies rampaging across the back axle to hilarious (but now a bit more serious) effect.
The paint is inspired by that Luna Rossa’s hull, a two-tone contrast that marries black and grey, while elsewhere the logos are now on a red background for the first time, there are freshly painted 19in wheels, Sparco seats, and a few more carbon fibre trimmings inside.
Looks bella no? Sadly, Alfa’s only building ten of this “most extreme Giulia Quadrifoglio ever”, and as you’ve probably just guessed, all ten have been accounted for. Vergogna.
