The new smart #5 debuts later this month and will arrive in 2025

smart's all-electric SUV looks a lot like the renders we saw earlier in the year

Published: 12 Aug 2024

Having previewed the all-electric #5 in April, smart has confirmed its new mid-sized SUV will be available to order in Europe at some point in 2025, following its global premiere later this month in Brisbane, Australia.

Looks alright, innit? The sketches show the #5 will be very similar to the previous renders, with smart’s familiarly boxy shape garnished with a bit of robust detailing. That’s because the #5 will target the ‘active lifestyle’ consumer base which the German marque has never really catered for in years gone.

There’s very little separating the conceptual design and these first official sketches, save for a rear wing, side skirts that are placed higher up and a few more fissures along the flanks for more personality. It’s also sitting on huge alloy wheels and ditches the all-terrain tyres, giving us a good look at what a proper urban dweller spec could look like.

We’ve already been told that it’ll house a battery that could be over 100kWh in size and paired with 800-volt technology. Result? Around 341 miles of range, of which a 10-80 per cent recharge is complete in 15 minutes.  It’s also likely to get all-wheel-drive (well, duh, it is supposedly an off-roader and that), but we’re yet to receive any note on other specific outputs.

We’re also in the dark about how many of the concept’s cabin embellishments will make the cut. We’re staying hopeful because there’s quite a bit in there that we like, including dual OLED screens, a portable speaker in the central reservation and… a ‘zero-gravity front passenger seat’. Don’t ask, because we don’t know either.

No word on pricing yet, but we’re expecting that to change as we head into the winter months and smart concludes pre-flight checks.
