The Volkswagen ID.7 GTX Tourer is a 335bhp all-electric estate
VW unveils a performance EV in wagon form. Budget Taycan Sport Turismo, anyone?
Fancy a Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo but can’t justify the recently facelifted version’s £87,300 start price? Well, it turns out the budget answer might lie elsewhere in the Volkswagen Group. In fact, the answer could lie with Volkswagen itself, because it has just unveiled the ID.7 GTX Tourer.
Essentially a hot version of the standard ID.7 estate, the GTX gets an electric motor on each axle to send 335bhp to all four wheels. VW says that makes this its most powerful ever estate car, which is probably a bit of a kick in the teeth to the current 316bhp Golf R estate.
We don’t have any performance figures just yet, but apparently one-in-five ID.4s and ID.5s sold in Europe are GTX versions, so VW felt the time was right to expand its all-electric performance arm right across its EV range. Hence the new ID.3 GTX too. And you can bet we’ll see an ID.7 GTX saloon in the near future. That will likely have the same powertrain as the Tourer and no doubt it’ll also get the same styling treatment.
Speaking of which, VW has treated the ID.7 Tourer to some sharp bumpers, 20-inch wheels and new light graphics to turn it into a GTX, while inside there’s red piping on the seats, red trim on the dash and door panels and red stitching on the steering wheel. That’s about it, and in good news there is still the same 1,714 litres of boot space as the standard car with the rear seats folded flat.
Pricing hasn’t actually been announced yet, but given that the ID.7 saloon starts at around £55,000 we can make an educated guess at somewhere north of £60,000. Yikes, maybe the ID.7 GTX won’t be the ‘budget’ option after all…
