Oh no: Grand Theft Auto VI has been delayed until May 2026
The developer needs more time to meet expectations, says an official statement
If you’d noticed that news on GTA 6 had gone a bit quiet since, well, its announcement back in 2023, this one might not come as a huge surprise. Developer Rockstar has announced that the most anticipated game on the planet has been delayed. Delayed until 26 May 2026 to be exact.
“We are very sorry that this is later than expected,” reads the studio’s statement, released on its official website and social channels. “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try to exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception.
“We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
Previously the game had been slated for a 2025 release date, so you’ve got a few extra months to wait before your glorious return to Vice City.
GTA 6’s reveal trailer broke numerous viewership records on YouTube when Rockstar shared it back in 2023. Gameplay details were scant to say the least, but as a mood piece it established that you’ll return to Rockstar’s biting pastiche of Florida, where 2002’s GTA: Vice City was also set.
Unlike the latter, though, GTA 6 is set in the present day and takes aim at many modern malices from social media and poorly thought-out tattoos to gratuitous twerking.
Note that the new release date is specific to the day, which is an indication that Rockstar’s pretty confident about hitting it. We’d expect to see gameplay before the end of 2025, and will be pestering Rockstar for it accordingly.
