Ubisoft is permanently closing accounts it thinks are inactive, removing game library access

Unless users respond to an email from the publisher within 30 days

Published: 24 Jul 2023

Time to log in to Ubisoft Launcher if you haven’t for a while - Ubisoft’s suspending inactive accounts and removing access to the game libraries associated with them.

Users who are deemed inactive by the publisher are receiving emails asking them to log back into their accounts within 30 days to confirm that they’re still active. At first glance it’s just a fiscally generous prince away from classic email scam territory, but Ubi has confirmed that the emails are legitimate, and that users who miss the 30-day deadline can raise a ticket with their support team to reactivate their accounts.

Why’s this happening? Likely it’s a GDPR thing. The publisher may be required to close accounts if the data associated with them is no longer required for collection.

“This is only if we have strong reasons to believe that the account in question will remain unused”, reads a statement on Ubisoft’s official site.

“We may also close long-term inactive accounts to maintain our database. You will be notified by email if we begin the process of closing your inactive account.”

However if it’s only been a few weeks since your last road trip in The Crew 2, you don’t need to worry. It’s not clear exactly how long needs to pass before an account falls into inactive territory, but an NME report from 2021 found that a six-month period was specified in Ubi’s GDPR policy at the time.

According to Ubisoft’s terms of service, technically if your account is suspended and disabled, you may not be able to create a new one without the publisher’s express permission.

So if you’d rather not wade through legal docs and support tickets in order to regain your access to that Bugatti Divo special edition with the magma paint job in The Crew 2, it’s probably worth logging into the Ubisoft launcher to signal that, yes, you would still like to retain access to all your games please.
