Here are seven Sub-Zero used cars for sub £20,000

What should you look for when buying a bargain used car? Reliability, service history or fitness for purpose? Of course not! All you really need to base your decision on is how fly the thing will make you look. And luckily, here at TG we can refer back to the Cool Wall for the definitive verdict. So, here are 10 sub-zero cars that you can now pick up for less than the price of a new Vauxhall Corsa…

First up is this Avantime, which comes complete with its massive doors, the 3.0-litre V6 and what the seller describes as “a few electrical issues”. Still, no other MPV will make you look this cool…

In Series 2, Episode 1 of modern-day TG, Jeremy and Richard decided that while the Ford StreetKa is simply cool, the newly launched Smart Roadster was sub-zero. Remember, the Cool Wall didn’t care about your lack of power or your supremely sluggish gearbox.

And now you can pick up the sweet little Smart for buttons. This one is less than £2,000 and has fewer than 50,000 miles on the clock.

To kick off Series 4, Jeremy raced James and Richard from London to Monte Carlo, with the former in the then-new and achingly pretty Aston Martin DB9. Hammond and May were confined to public transport. Then came the Cool Wall, and the Aston was famously given its own section in a mini fridge beyond even Sub-Zero.

Unbelievably, you can now get all of that style for, um, just over £20,000. Okay, okay, it's more than the budget in the headline, but check out this one with its full main dealer service history, deep blue paint and blue/beige interior.

You’ve got eyes, you don’t need us to tell you how stylish the Alfa Romeo Brera was… and still is. Yep, despite prices now sitting as low as the £3,000 mark for the 3.2-litre V6, the 2+2 coupe remains resolutely Sub-Zero.

This one will cost you just over double that baseline with an asking price of £6,950, but it is one of just 500 UK-only Breras tweaked by Prodrive. Known as the Brera S, these special editions were given stiffer suspension and beefier brakes, while the four-wheel drive system of standard V6 cars was binned to save weight.

The Citroen C6 is a large, wafty French saloon, and even though it wasn’t quite as wacky as some that went before it, the depreciation followed a well-trodden path. Thankfully, so did how chic you’d look behind the wheel if you were one of the three people that purchased one in the UK.

“Everyone will think you are an assassin,” said Jeremy. Buy one used and you’ll look like a particularly thrifty contract killer, because cars like this one with its 2.7-litre V6 diesel now cost under £7,000.

Yes, the third and final Volkswagen Scirocco was essentially just a Golf in a slim fit suit, but it was an excellent-looking car and could even be had in full-fat R form with 261bhp being sent through its front wheels. This one looks particularly tidy at just over £6k. And remember, the standard version was actually our Car of the Year in 2008.

In Series 12, Episode 5 Jeremy decided that the Jaguar XKR Convertible had competition when it came to the ‘coolest car in Britian’ stakes. And yep, said competition came in the form of a giant Swedish box. This was the third generation of V70, and you can now pick one up with moon miles on it for just over £2,000.
