Walter Rohrl returns to Pikes Peak
We’ve just caught wind of a reunion later this year that’s brought a little tear of joy to our eye. No, it’s not S Club 7. Walter Rohrl will once again stepping into his 600hp, 1000kg Audi Sport quattro S1 and spanking it up Pikes Peak.
It’s 25 years since the man navigated his way (mostly sideways) through 156 turns to the 4,301 metre summit of the legendary American course. In 1987 the two-time rally world champ - and his melon-sized testes - got up the mountain in a record breaking time of 10:47:85. And back then there were no guardrails and it was done on a loose sand and gravel surface.
If you can’t make it to Colorado on July 8th, you can watch Rohrl’s 1987 run below. Once you get past the German bits, there’s some handy footwork, wailing waste-gate chatter, a 2.1-litre five-cylinder engine screaming at 8,000rpm and a long way down if it all goes wrong. You’re going to like it…
