Question of the Week: which concept car would you most like to see brought to life?
Cast your mind back to some of automotive’s greatest ‘what if’ moments
Concept cars are brilliant, wouldn’t you agree? They often demonstrate a combination of manufacturers’ ambition and designers’ unshackled possibilities, but the sad reality is too few make it to production.
Take our coverage last week of the Honda HP-X. Created during the Eighties as a preview for what a then-futuristic Honda performance vehicle could be, it’s mid-engined, has an incredible amount of tech and, even now, looks like it would fit in a world built by Skynet. Though it would later inspire the development of the NSX, it too never saw the showroom floors.
It got us thinking: which are the greatest concepts that never made it any further? We’ll shine some light on a few of our personal favourites.
Remember the Cadillac Cien? Built to commemorate the marque’s 100th anniversary, it was all set to be the car which revolutionised Caddy's image with a massive 7.5-litre ‘Northstar’ V12 and striking looks.
Or how about the 16C Galibier from 2009? Though mostly associated with low-slung, two-door, million-horsepower hypercars, Bugatti did once conceive the idea of extra doors and a much longer body. It also teased how not to style a saloon’s grille before BMW came and took that idea to another level entirely.
One more: remember the Mazda Furai? Based on an LMP2 racer, it was designed as a two-door, tri-rotor screamer that could’ve been the road-going successor to the legendary 787B. Let's quickly gloss over its unfortunate demise.
Anyway, over to you lovely people: which concept takes your vote? As per usual, the very best comments will form the structure of our Friday round-up post. Happy posting.
