Reckon modern WRC is boring? Watch this video
A short clip highlighting one man’s quest for a decent Snapchat proves rallying really isn’t dull
We recently brought you news that, in a bid to spice up the world of rallying, the WRC will revamp its rulebook for the 2017 season.
But we’ve also just seen footage from the last round of the WRC championship in Poland, a short clip proving the pinnacle of going fast on four wheels on pretty much any surface isn’t quite dishwater yet.
It also shows that some people really will go to silly lengths to get a new Facebook cover photo.
If you hit play above, you’ll see Jari-Matti Latvala’s potent VW Polo WRC approach a dusty crest at full chat. As the crowd clears a path for the incoming rally rocket, one man bravely/stupidly holds his ground in order to get ‘the shot’.
As you can tell from his sunburn, this spectator isn’t the sort of chap to play by the rules. But as Jari’s Polo blasts through frame – curtseying for the camera on the way past – you can also see that these cars and the drivers who pilot them are still pretty special.
With WRC’s new freer rules for 2017 - coinciding with Toyota’s return to the sport, don’t forget - likely to make the cars faster, wider, more powerful and even wingier, surely we’re in for even bigger jumps in a few years’ time.
Excited? We sure are. And remember kids, motorsport is dangerous, so stay at a safe distance while Snapchatting.
