Can you guess which one-off Ford this 480bhp+ V8-powered resto pays tribute to?

Iconic Auto Sports reimagines a really old Ford, fills it with a really mighty V8

Published: 26 Nov 2025

You may not have heard of Iconic Auto Sports before. It is a small, low-volume carmaker based in Buenos Aires and has recently revealed a small, low-volume car: behold, the SP40 Restomod Speedster. Quite something.

It pays tributes to – that’s right! – Edsel Ford’s Special Speedster from 1934, which of course everyone reading this site should be extremely familiar with. Edsel’s original car was a one-off built to his exact specifications and spun off Ford’s then Model 40 chassis.

And even then, it was really quite ahead of its time: a custom aluminium body, streamlined looks and flathead V8. It was one step ahead of the hot rods that would later swarm California.

Enough history. This new one pays tribute via Ford’s Coyote V8, here spooled up to deliver in excess of 480 American horsies. The 5.0-litre is matched to a five-speed manual gearbox, Brembos, independent double wishbone suspension, and powers an assembly that weighs just 1,190kg. About the same as a Range Rover’s wheel. Probably.

It’s some assembly, too. IAS has poured the entire carton of Art Deco all over its recreation, using carbon fibre for the body atop a tubular spaceframe chassis. The entire thing was crafted by hand, and inside there’s a wealth of walnut trim, hand-machined aluminium and yet more carbon fibre.

While Edsel’s original was a true one-off, the SP40 won’t be: yes, each one will be unique to the client’s whims, but we’re told “no two examples will ever be the same”. As for the price, we’re not given one, but considering each one is hand built to order… well, it’ll likely be quite something.
