Here’s what the new BMW X5 looks like with M Performance Parts

With its X-shaped headlights we already thought that the Neue Klasse X5 was cosplaying as a 1960s racer, but now BMW has taken the sports car fancy dress thing to a whole new level.

What you see above is the angry X5 wearing its new ‘M Performance Parts’. We’re told that the new bits “accentuate the dynamic look”, but we’ll let you be the judge of that.

Up front there’s a jutting three-part front splitter and little carbon nostrils inside the illuminated kidneys, while round the back you’ve got a proper rear spoiler and two little bits of diffuser surrounding the exhausts that are also made from carbon fibre.

The separate central section of diffuser is actually made from a fibre composite called aramid, which we’re told is like carbon in its look, structure and strength, but it can be penetrated by electromagnetic waves so can be used to cover sensors. For that reason, BMW has also used it for the mirror caps.

New alloy options are also available, with the pick of the bunch being the smaller 21in winter wheels. Oh, and we’re told that “for the future BMW M Performance model with V8 engine an M Performance Sound silencer system is planned for specific markets outside Europe.” Boooo.

Inside it’s mostly about practicality, so alongside some sporty floor mats there are also new holders and adapters that allow you to stick phones, tablets and even clothes hangers onto the back of the front seats. Neat.
