There’s a new Ineos Grenadier Commercial so that you can claim VAT back in the UK

Proper van-style Grenadier Commercial replaces the old Utility Wagon for better tax benefits

Published: 02 May 2024

The Ineos Grenadier Utility Wagon was an interesting thing. It was classed as an N1 commercial vehicle meaning you paid the van VED rate, but because of weight and the UK’s complex tax laws buyers weren’t able to claim VAT back on the purchase price of the car unless it was registered as a pool car and used solely for business use.

That made the Utility Wagon extremely costly compared with its pickup truck rivals. Now Ineos is replacing it with a new Grenadier Commercial exclusively for the UK so that buyers can reclaim VAT and receive lower benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax rates.

This is a two-seat Grenadier with a flat van-spec floor and a floor-to-roof bulkhead partition behind the cabin. It can apparently carry a standard Euro pallet, has more than 2,000 litres of load space and can tow 3.5 tonnes. Impressive.

It should be just as useful off-road as a standard Grenadier too with its ladder frame chassis, solid beam axles, two-speed transfer case and up to three locking differentials. Oh, and like its five-seat counterparts it can be had with a 3.0-litre turbocharged BMW straight-six in petrol or diesel forms.

Grenadiers are built in Hambach in France, but we’re told the conversion to Commercial spec will be undertaken in the UK by Pontypool-based specialists EDC Limited. Orders open today (2 May) and prices will start from £51,931 excluding VAT.

“Customers in the UK have been asking for this addition to our model line-up since we launched in 2022, so we’re pleased to make this available so quickly,” said Ineos commercial director George Ratcliffe.

“The versatility of the Grenadier platform allows this level of modification without any compromise to the driving dynamics or off-road capabilities.”
