7,500 people have applied to buy a Ford Mustang GTD in the US

D’oh, Ford only planned to make around 1,000 GTDs and it hasn’t even gone on sale in Europe yet

Published: 23 May 2024

So, it turns out that lots of people in North America would like to own a bonkers quick Ford Mustang. Yep, Ford tells us applications to buy a Mustang GTD have now closed across the Atlantic, with over 7,500 people registering their interest in the $325,000+ bewinged muscle car.

Of course, this isn’t just any muscle car, hence the need for applications to buy the thing. The GTD was unveiled last year and has cars like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS in its sights. It also has an 800bhp+ dry-sumped 5.2-litre supercharged V8, a carbon fibre body, trick Multimatic suspension, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes and an F1-spec, DRS-equipped rear wing.

Originally Ford told us the GTD would be built in ‘limited numbers’ and most guesses put the figure somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 cars, but it’ll have to up that figure if it doesn’t want to disappoint prospective buyers. Heck, it hasn’t even gone on sale in Europe yet.

“Over 20 per cent of the traffic on the Mustang GTD application website comes from the motorsport community,” said Ford. “And among individual applicants, one in four are Mustang owners, while one in five say they own a competitor’s vehicle with a similar level of performance.”

It sounds like successful applicants in the US will receive 2025 and 2026 model year cars, with European buyers likely to have to wait a long time for their ultimate muscle car.

Still, that won’t stop Ford from bringing the GTD over here to show off. In fact, it has already confirmed that it’ll set an official timed lap at the Nürburgring towards the end of 2024. Reckon it’ll be able to get close to the GT3 RS’s 6m 49.3s time?
