Nissan GT-R news - GT-R hits 850bhp - 2009

Published: 25 Aug 2009

It's a question we're sure you've all asked yourself at some point: what happens if you fit a Nissan GT-R with big new turbochargers and a fat exhaust... and then fill it full of race fuel?

You get Switzer's 850bhp GT-R, that's what you get.

Catering to Americans who feel the GT-R is a bit slow for proper track stuff, tuning firm Switzer has given the 3.8-litre V6 a thorough working over, and then treated it to a tank full of high-octane race fuel.

It adds up to 850bhp and a massive 820lb ft of torque. Switzer hasn't released any performance figures - or indeed confirmed whether its R850 GT-R will be even vaguely road legal - but don't forget that the stock GT-R hits 62mph in around 3.5 seconds and will run to 193mph.

It's a bit of a cliché, but this thing could nail the Bugatti Veyron over a quarter-mile.

Which makes the Switzer GT-R a complete surfeit of excess. But we can't help applauding the sheer lunacy of taking a near-perfect supercar and trying to double its power.
