We found a used Vauxhall VX220 for less than £14k
Targa top? Check. Turbocharger? Check. Bright yellow paint? Very, very check
Fourteen grand doesn’t buy you much these days in the car world, particularly if you want something fun. Heck, you’ll need closer to 18 for a base spec Caterham. Solution? This Vauxhall VX220: three pedals, 216bhp, circa one-tonne kerbweight. Wins everywhere you look, frankly.
It’s not entirely standard, with notable upgrades including aftermarket coilovers, bigger brakes and a new back box for a throatier burble from the exhaust. These small but meaningful changes should only heighten what is already a wonderfully pure driving experience, though.
And don’t forget: you’ll be having those giggles in what’s arguably Vauxhall’s greatest-ever design draped in a stunning bright yellow coat. Step inside and it's exactly as you remember: stripped-out, bare-knuckle, minimalist. All the interior trim and switchgear still seems to be intact and in top condition. And just look at those thick support beams between the seats and the doors; the perfect lay-by for your arms when you’re perched so low to the ground.
It’s just a brilliant piece of engineering. And one that can now be yours for less than a third of the price of a modern-day range-topping Vauxhall Astra Estate. What are you even waiting for?
