Relax with Honda's immensely soothing mpg challenge set to ‘80s lo-fi beats

Too much automotive noise? Chill out watching slow cars do massive mpg

There’s been a lot of car noise lately. You know what we’re talking about. You know what everyone is talking about. So take five – or perhaps 2hr 30m and 10s – chilling the heck out with Honda.

It’s a video showcasing its 2024 ‘Eco Mileage Challenge’ which, in news that’ll hopefully not shock you because that is definitely not the vibe here, is a challenge to do lots of miles and be the most eco.

Competitors design and build their own race cars – really stretching both ‘competition’ and ‘race’ here – to see how far they can run on just one litre of fuel. The average speed is 15.5mph, “aiming to reach the goal without depleting their fuel consumption as much as possible”. 15.5mph also means it won’t deplete your nervous senses, either.

This year’s winners were ‘Team Fireball’, recording a whopping 5,918mpg in the ‘Carbon Neutral Fuel Class’, while the ‘High-Octane Class’ winners were ‘Wednesday Club’. They won it back in 2023, too, and in 2024 managed an incredible 7,080mpg – “a distance comparable to travelling from Tokyo to Manila”.

Honda’s uploaded the entire challenge for your delectation, and set the whole thing to a “1980s lo-fi chill mix” of “city pop”, and it’s the most relaxing, soothing bit of automotive video you’re likely to watch this year. Enjoy.
