  1. Timex Expedition North Sierra

    Timex Expedition North Sierra

Chunky 40mm stainless steel case, 100m water resistance and a handsome face that can be backlit with Timex’s Indiglo system for legibility in all conditions. Plus solar power, so it will never run out. Hell of a lot of watch for the money.

  2. Swatch Black Hepcat

    Swatch Black Hepcat

Swatch has come a long way since the colourful watches of the Eighties. There is still plenty of colour, plus automatic movements and loads of different sizes. This quartz model has a 42mm case that is a slender 6.7mm thick. Water resistant to 30m.

    £160; swatch.com

  3. Casio G-Shock GA-2100

    Casio G-Shock GA-2100

The reason so many armed forces around the world use G-Shocks is because they are tough as anything. Look cool too, and they even make smaller ones now so there is a G-Shock to suit every wrist. This analogue-digital is slightly over 45mm across and has 200m water resistance.

    £99.90; g-shock.co.uk

  4. Braun Classic

    Braun Classic

You may see Braun and think electric shaver. Don’t be put off, and look again. Minimalist design, beautifully round 40mm case in matte stainless steel with mesh bracelet. If you don’t care about fancy names, and want a handsome watch, this is a cracker.

    £160; braun-clocks.com

  5. Mondaine Classic Golden Steel

    Mondaine Classic Golden Steel

A watch based on a Swiss railway clock from the Forties, but decked out in gold plated steel. Sounds gaudy, but looks rather fine. Quartz movement in a 40mm case, water resistant to 30m. Milanese mesh band completes the look.

    £249; uk.mondaine.com

  6. Nixon Light Wave

    Nixon Light Wave

Ticks many eco boxes, with a woven strap made from recycled ocean plastic, a solar movement to avoid battery disposal and a California company telling you that the watch will place you “on a higher frequency”. Not sure about that, but it is nice watch for not too much money.

    £140; uk.nixon.com
