Buying

What should I be paying?

Nissan keeps it simple with the Sentra, given that all models are mechanically identical, and thus the prices between them all only vary slightly.

The base S trim gives you all the standard equipment for $22,600. SV takes the bare bones version and swaps the 16-inch steelies with 16-inch alloys, more color options, remote start and the ability to add accessories like the convenience package (heated seats, ambient interior lighting, wireless charger, etc) and the optional moonroof.

SR is the sporty Sentra, which starts at $25,000 and throws in all the cool-dude elements like the blacked-out V-motion grille, 18-inch wheels, the two-tone paint options, rear lip spoiler and a red SR badge so everyone knows that you’ve got attitude. Well, as much as you need for a Sentra, at least.

SL is the more mature model, with a more subdued color palate, quilted seats, and just about all the optional features included as standard, and this starts at $27,990.

Which one should I buy?

If we’re being super-sensible Sentra shoppers, the SV and a handful of options like the ones included in the convenience package would take care of most needs. We kind of like the SR even though it’s a little more costly and doesn’t really differ from the SV in the ways that count, but the two-tone paint and 18s are tempting.

Rivals at this price point are few, though they are coming for the Nissan’s throat. Kia’s K4 sedan brings style and convenience at a similar price point, though it's light on engagement. The Toyota Corolla is also lacking in the fun department but more than makes up for that with its wallet-friendly price and particularly high fuel efficiency.
