Buying

What should I be paying?

Two specifications are available, Plus and Ultra, with prices starting at £65,560 for the former, £77,620 for the latter. The cars are generally well-equipped – as you'd hope for that amount of money – and a glance at the configurator suggests speccing an ES90 is a less wallet-wilting process than its key German rivals.

Go for the base-spec Plus trim and you're limited to just the Single Motor powertrain with its slightly smaller battery. Still more than 300 miles of real-world range though if you stick with the smallest 20in wheels. You also get four zone climate control as standard (four zones? That's insane), a heated steering wheel, heated front and rear seats, LED lights, a 360-degree parking camera and a panoramic roof. Of course, you also get that giant central touchscreen with all of its main functions, and there's wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto too.

Options on top of Plus include the active chassis with air suspension and adaptive dampers (£1,995), 21in aero spoke wheels (£795), an electrochromic panoramic roof (£995), and the perforated and ventilated Nordico upholstery (£800).

Ultra trim essentially bundles all of this together, while also adding fancier pixel headlights, soft close doors, extra sound insulation and ventilated/massaging seats. It also opens up the option of the dual motor powertrains, and you're looking at entry prices of £81,460 for the Twin Motor or £86,060 for the Twin Motor Performance.

Vapour Grey is the only free paint colour, so be prepared to splash out an extra £845 for Mulberry Red, Forest Lake (essentially a dark green) or Denim Blue.

The ES90 is compatible with Volvo’s Plug & Charge service, which allows owners/users to link their preferred payment method to the car. That means no faffing about at charging points or clogging up your smartphone with Apps. Speaking of which, the ES90 also encourages you to turn your phone into the key.

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that residual values on large EVs have been subject to some punishing market forces. Lease deals obviously depend on spec, mileage and supplier, but expect the ES90 Plus to cost around £850 per month on a four-year PCP deal with £7,000 down as a deposit and a 10,000-mile yearly limit.
