What should I be paying?
Given the headline specs, surprisingly little really. It's big, quick on the road and even quicker at the charger. Spec even on the entry level car includes all the driver assists, a heat pump, vehicle-to-load and the 18-speaker stereo. The front seats adjust electrically and are heated, ventilated and massaging. The rear ones are heated. The door handles pop out when you unlock.
In light of that, £39,990 for the Standard Range and £44,990 for the Long Range is sharp pricing, particularly when the BYD Sealion 7 only starts at £45k. Options are few: metallic paint (£700) and some mudguards and floor mats. Then you’ll need to choose between ‘Light Grey’ and ‘Dark Grey’ for your interior.
Lease rates start from £289 per month over four years for the entry level car if you can stump up a chunky £10,249 deposit. That’s with an 8,000-mile limit. The base spec Model Y would be slightly cheaper on the same terms and would offer an extra 2,000 miles.
Now, the relationship between battery sizes and WLTP range doesn't make the G6 look very efficient. But we found that the single motor version managed to get near the promise. Our figure of over 4.0mi/kWh isn't bad at all for a bulky crossover. Unfortunately in the same conditions we saw under 3.0mi/kWh in the twin motor, £49,990 Performance. Perhaps we were enjoying that 480bhp too often.
The warranty is fairly strong: five years or 75,000 miles on the whole vehicle, eight/100k on the battery and high voltage equipment, and 12 years for body rust.
Xpeng is distributed here in the UK by International Motors, the Solihull company that brings you Subaru, Isuzu and GWM. It also introduced the UK to Hyundai, and has a homologation office in China, so it knows what it's doing and has smart, independent-minded dealers.
