A mountain biker has jumped through the middle of two moving self-driving trucks
Literally. One man and his bike. Two massive trucks. Many brave pills
A man on a mountain bike has jumped right through the middle of two massive, self-driving trucks. Happy Wednesday!
It’s the work of Scania and Red Bull Athlete/pushbike enthusiast Matt Jones, who now becomes the first person in the world to jump through two moving trucks.
It is as wild and outrageous as it sounds. Jones had but a momentary window of opportunity to complete the feat – less than a second, apparently – having first jotted down the idea on a notepad.
He needed self-driven Scania trucks because of the accuracy required for the whole ‘less than a second to jump through them’ thing. The jump was conducted at an airfield close to where Scania calls home in Södertälje, Sweden.
“I tried to turn my brain off and become autonomous,” said Jones. “I was completely locked in staring at the road ahead with the trucks in my peripheral vision, knowing that they were going to cross over each other and reveal the gap I was going to jump through.
“When I got halfway up the ramp and the trucks had initially gone past each other, I felt huge adrenaline because I could see the target on the other side. I instantly went from feeling numb to being flooded with adrenaline, it was nothing like I’ve experienced before,” he added.
“You need to remember, he has just a blink of an eye to make this jump,” said Scania’s autonomous solutions boss Peter Hafmar. “With no margin for error, the team had to be so precise and calculated throughout. Thanks to our autonomous trucks, we could create a window of opportunity needed for Matt to do this kind of jump.”
And it’s some jump. Have a watch of the effort here. Happy Wednesday!
