Listen to these BMW M1 Procars

Video: pair of M1s take to Swiss hillclimb. Much noise is made

Published: 06 Jul 2016

This is one of those times where we ask that you turn your volume up, stop whatever you’re doing and take a minute to just listen.

What you’re looking at here is some footage from last year’s Gurnigel Hillclimb in Switzerland featuring two BMW M1 Procars. The M1 Procar, lest we forget, was the star of its own one-make race series back in the late Seventies. Rounds were scheduled to coincide with grands prix, and the five fastest F1 drivers were guaranteed drives for the half hour races.

It only lasted two seasons – Niki Lauda won the first, and Nelson Piquet the second – before BMW cancelled the whole programme. The Procars themselves were sold off, and raced in other smaller series. A shame, that.

World’s best sounding motorsport? Maybe.
