You lot were pretty impressed by Hyundai’s new all-electric Ioniq 5. So were a lot of people, by the sounds of things. The company has confirmed that since the car was revealed on 23 February, it’s received a whopping 236,000 “expressions of interest” from potential buyers.

And that’s just in Europe, too. Hyundai says that’s the most interest it’s had in any new car, and that the 3,000 £45k ‘First Edition’ cars were all accounted for three times over within 24 hours of the car’s unveiling.

Remember the Ioniq 5 is the first Hyundai built on the company’s new Electric-Global Modular Platform. Teased by the 45 concept in 2019, its styling pays homage to Giugiaro-designed Pony from the Seventies. It comes in two versions with single or dual-motors and a 58 or 72.6kWh battery – 0-62mph takes as little as 5.2 seconds, while the rangiest version can travel almost 300 miles between charges.

The Ioniq 5 is much bigger than it looks in photos, with a three-metre wheelbase, and uses 800-volt battery tech to replenish 62 miles of range in just five minutes on a sufficiently meaty charger. Click on these blue words for the full story.
