Good grief, Geely’s new EV charger gets you from 10 to 70 per cent in under five minutes

Not wanting to be outdone by BYD’s 1,500kW ‘Flash Charging’, Geely has now announced its fifth generation ‘Geely Smart Charging Station’, and we’re told that it delivers a peak power output of 2,250kW. Impressive, but surely they could have come up with a cooler name? We’ll call it Quicksilver Charging. One for the Marvel fans out there.

Anyway, this new tech has been unveiled alongside the Geely group’s ‘Next-Gen Ultra Short Blade Battery’ (again with the naming, guys) and we’re told that in real-world tests, it was able to charge a Lynk & Co 10 and a Zeekr 001 from 10 to 70 per cent in just 4m 30s. Yikes. Oh, and 10 to 97 per cent took only 8m 40s. That’s essentially a full charge in just enough time to purchase and chug down a caffeinated beverage.

Now, the makeup of the new battery apparently cuts heat generated during charging by 10 per cent, and Geely has also worked with a company called StepFun to develop a ‘smart energy AI model’ that essentially coordinates lots of data and then uses fancy algorithms to predict the battery temperatures up to 30 seconds in advance. It can then adjust the charging power on the fly to keep the battery’s average temperature below 55°C while plugged in. Nice.

There’s also a new ‘end-to-end five-point liquid-cooling system’ that looks after everything from the charging station energy-storage battery to the charging pile, the cable, the charging port on the car and the battery pack.

Geely – which owns Volvo, Polestar and Lotus, don’t forget – says that this and the AI charging management software combine to give the battery a longer life by 20 per cent.
