Hold up, Dacia’s new EV starts from €10,920 in Germany

Germany’s impressive electric car grant means the Spring will cost less than £10,000

Published: 23 Mar 2021

When Dacia first announced the Spring Electric as a concept back in March last year, it led with the claim that it’d be “Europe’s most affordable all-electric vehicle”.

Well, now it’s delivering on that promise, because in Germany at least, prices for the production version will start at €10,920. Very impressive indeed. Technically of course, that’s a €20,490 start price for the base-spec Comfort trim level, but the German government provides a €9,570 grant, meaning you can pick up a brand-new Spring for the equivalent of around £9,400.

All this in a week where the UK government cut the plug-in car grant (PiCG) from £3,000 to £2,500.

Sadly, there are still no plans for the Spring to make it to the UK, but let’s have a quick recap of the specs anyway. It combines a 27.4kWh battery with a 44bhp electric motor (no, that’s not a typo) for a WLTP range of 143 miles. Plenty for a cheap and cheerful, jacked-up city car, no? For what it’s worth, the Spring also manages a top speed of just 78mph and takes a glacial 19.1 seconds to get from 0-62mph.

In Comfort trim at that base price, you’ll get white paint, a Bluetooth radio and a Mode 2 charging cable only. A 30kW fast(er) charger is an optional extra, and there’s a Comfort Plus trim level that also includes a seven-inch infotainment screen, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. That’ll set German customers back €12,220 after the grant.

What do we think, Internet?
