Mercedes could make an AMG-badged EV cabriolet

Merc’s chief operating officer hints at an all-electric roadster for the future…

Published: 14 Sep 2021

“It’s not that easy to build a good-looking electric cabriolet,” Mercedes’ chief operating officer Markus Schäfer told TG recently.

“And we have to recognise that the demand for roadsters and cabriolets is declining.” Uh oh, not looking great for wind-in-yer-face motoring in the future, is it?

“China is not a cabriolet market and there are less buyers in Europe compared to some years ago. But I think it’s a very attractive product and an emotional product that builds the brand.”

That sounds a little more promising. “We have to put our thinking caps on and engineer an EV in the form of a roadster,” Schäfer continued. Great news, especially as we still love being able to drop the roof down here in Blighty, and the advent of EVs is unlikely to change that anytime soon.

“When you think about AMG and turning AMG into an electric brand, we will definitely think about a cabriolet as well.”

That sounds very much like Merc is looking into an AMG EV convertible to us. Maybe the Fiat 500C is about to get a slightly more expensive and slightly more powerful rival. Thoughts, Internet?
