What sort of cars will the Honda 0 Series EVs be?
Spoiler alert: don’t expect a Type R hot hatch or any kind of sports car
Back in 2017 Honda showed us a ‘Sports EV’ concept – a sort of lower, sleeker cousin to the Urban EV concept that evolved into the Honda e. So, we hoped than the new ‘0 Series’ of Honda EVs would feature a sports coupe too.
No such luck, according to a roadmap of the range shown to TopGear.com this week. In fact, see if you can spot a theme.
First out of the traps in 2026 will be a production version of the Saloon concept, shorn of its huge gullwing doors. It’ll be quickly joined by a mid-size SUV and entry-level SUV.
2027 adds a three-row large SUV, while a compact SUV is shoehorned into the family the following year.
Fast-forward to 2029 and it’s, um, another SUV. Merely billed as a ‘small SUV’ at this stage, which is somehow neither entry-level or compact. Right.
The last model currently being touted is a smaller compact saloon in 2030, bringing the total of Zeroes to seven.
What’s conspicuously absent is a supermini successor to the Honda e – perhaps predictable given sales were a big disappointment. But there’s also no electric ‘Civic’ – no heartland hatchback. Because SUVs are more globally popular, it would appear. That means no hot hatchbacks, then.
And there’s also no sign of the saloons morphing into a wagon, or a coupe. The 0 Series will be dominated by various sizes of SUV. A practical business decision no doubt, but one that lacks Honda’s flair for imagination?
