Woohoo! Volvo's bringing saloon cars back with this all-electric ES90
First the estate came back from the dead - now it's the saloon's turn. Plus: electric version of XC60 SUV incoming
As if the Volvo XC90 update yesterday wasn't enough, it's not only teased images of a forthcoming fully electric saloon, but it's also confirmed there’s an EX60 on the way.
Which means, woohoo - the S90 will return! The ES90 (pictured) will be an all-electric version of that old four-door, and though no official details have yet been released, the saloon is likely to take some components from the EX90. That carries the massive 111kWh battery in its floor, which supports up to 250kW charging and claims a 374-mile range.
It'll be spun off a new modular architecture that'll underpin all of Volvo's future electric cars, starting with the EX90.
The tech suite – essentially the brain of the vehicle – will holistically control the entire electronics and connectivity package through one single stack. That's quite a feat – cars have an increasing number of computerised components in them, which creates issues around cost and weight.
Aptly called the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack, the car maker will be able to cherry-pick whichever layers it needs from the stack to configure different models in different ways. Volvo has confirmed it'll be powered by an Nvidia chip and will have an Android-based interface.
The new tech stack will be deployed in the EX90 first, then we're told its development will also benefit the ES90. And in turn, the development of the stack for the ES90 will inform the forthcoming all-electric EX60. That’ll be the ‘Mama Bear’-model due to sit between the small, nimble EX30 and will most likely mirror many of the attributes of the XC60, only just in pure electric guise.
The ES90 might launch as early as Spring 2025, with the EX60 some time after that. More as we get it.
