Fight! The Microlino Lite is here to take on the Citroen Ami

Modern day Isetta bubble car gets a limited top speed of 28mph so 14-year-olds can drive it in Europe

Published: 26 Feb 2024

This is the brand new Microlino Lite, and despite its adorable proportions, it wants a scrap with the Citroen Ami.

Micro (that’s now the name of the company that builds the all-electric bubble car recreation) unveiled its new Microlino Lite at the Geneva Motor Show today, and the big news is the standard car’s usual heady top speed of just under 50mph has been reined in to allow the Lite to adhere to L6e light quadricycle regulations.

So, like the Ami, this version of the Microlino tops out at 28mph and as a result it can be driven by anyone over the age of 14 (in Europe) with just a moped-spec driving licence. Peak power stands at a frankly terrifying 12bhp.

The battery actually remains the same as in the big brother Microlino, so a 5.5kWh unit is standard and provides 62 miles of range. Need more than that? You can double up to an 11kWh battery for 112 miles of range.

We’re told that two colour options will be available – ‘Venice Blue’ and ‘Berlin Anthracite’ – and you still get an opening sunroof and a 230-litre boot. Impressive.

“The Microlino Lite is our contribution to making sustainable mobility solutions accessible to an even wider community,” says founder Merlin Ouboter. “We recognise the growing need for such mobility, especially among those who want to be safe and protected from the weather without a driver's licence.”

You will still pay for the Microlino’s style though. Whereas an Ami can be had for an impressive £99 per month, the Microlino Lite will start at around £130.
