The new all-electric Peugeot e-408 is here, and it has a 270-mile range
Plus, it gets ChatGPT, which means everyone’s going to have to learn how to say ‘Peugeot’ properly now
Say bonjour to the new Peugeot e-408. The all-electric variant of the Everything Everywhere All At Once Car - a fastback-styled crossover SUV - has finally launched, and like its ICE and hybrid sibling, it looks... rather striking.
The e-408 features a 61kWh battery powering a 213bhp electric motor. We’re told the battery is bigger than the 308 because the longer 2.79m wheelbase has enabled more NMC battery cells to be packed into the floor.
Three drive modes help you manage the claimed 270 miles of range - 'Normal' offers 193bhp, 'Eco' drops that to 173bhp, while 'Sport' maximises power to 213bhp. Charging maxes out at a respectable 120kW and means the SUV-crossover-coupé mix can re-juice between 20-80 per cent in a half hour. Competitive enough.
Design-wise it gets that signature ‘feline’ look we’ve already seen on the hybrid versions of the Peugeot 408. On the front end, there's a smooth grille flanked by fancy headlights looking like fangs. At the back, Peugeot describes ‘cat’s ears’-shaped haunches and rear lights that look like claws. Tiddles approves.
There are two trim choices: standard 'Allure' and GT. Inside, a heated steering wheel and heated seats come as standard. The i-Cockpit infotainment suite features a 10in high-definition central display, with configurable touch button shortcuts below. In addition to TomTom navigation and remote updates, Peugeot’s given the e-408 the ChatGPT treatment, too.
‘Ok Peugeot’ is the programmed wake word, which is perhaps not as purrr-fect as you'd expect. According to a BusinessFinancing survey in May 2024, Peugeot tops the list for the most mispronounced car brand globally. Quelle dommage.
While the GT trim doesn't offer any difference on the power front, the front and rear windows and laminated side windows – for the purposes of damping and security – get even thicker. There's also fancier headlights and an electric tailgate, while Apple Carplay and Android Auto – available as standard – are coupled with a posher sound system and upgraded driver assist package.
UK pricing hasn’t yet been confirmed, but prices start from around €43,900 (£36,858) for the standard model and £38,252 (€45,900) for the GT version in France. Deliveries for the e-408 begin the new year and of course, Peugeot’s eight-year Allure Care warranty applies. Alluring enough for you? Or have too many car segments been rolled into one shape? Thoughts below, as ever.
