Video: here’s how Bugatti's incredible Vision GT concept was created

Watch Bug’s 280mph racing concept in (virtual) action. Pray it becomes real

Published: 08 Oct 2015

“We wanted the car to be memorable,” says Bugatti designer Sasha Selipanov. “We wanted the car to create an imprint on your mind, so you would not forget it.”

We’d say you succeeded, Mr Selipanov. When Bugatti launched its Vision GT at the Frankfurt show a couple of weeks back, it did so to the soundtrack of a million mandibles hitting the floor simultaneously. Though a concept cooked up to race in the virtual world of Gran Turismo, it’s far from a mere digital flight of fantasy.

For starters, the Vision GT exists in real, three-dimensional reality. Not 250mph-plus reality, true, but the Frankfurt concept was far more than a paper-maiche mock-up.

“It was our outspoken goal to stay connected to the real world as much as possible,” says Bugatti design boss Achim Anscheidt.

And now Bugatti has released this rather lovely video, detailing the design process and creation of the Vision GT, a process clearly steeped in reality rather than vapourware fantasy.

“We’ve had the dream to do such a car for a very long time in the design department,” explains Selipanov. “Taking the Bugatti, stripping it of all its excess luxury and doing a thoroughbred racing car.”

And a blinkin' fast one, too. The video’s worth a watch not just for some rather lovely lingering shots on the Vision GTs juiciest details, nor for some – surprisingly sideways – in-game footage of the racer blasting round La Sarthe, but also for a cameo appearance by Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi… driving a vintage Bugatti.

The Vision GT was widely tipped to hint at the styling of the Veyron’s successor, but with new VW boss Matthias Muller this week stating that all future investments not ‘absolutely vital’ will be cancelled or delayed, it seems very possible our wait for a non-virtual follow-up to the world’s fastest car might be a longer one than hoped…
