What do you want to know about life with a Honda Civic Type R?
Top Gear’s got a 316bhp, FK8 Civic Type R for six months. Any questions?
This, friends, is Top Gear’s new Honda Civic Type R long-term test car. It’s joining us for six months, during which we’ll see what our current favourite hot hatch – the TG 2017 Car of the Year – is really like to live with. And we’re going to share that with you, if no-one objects. Good.
You might remember we’ve brought you long-term updates on life with an Audi R8 V10 Plus, Aston Martin DB11, and Ariel Nomad this year. Now it’s time for a more ‘normal’ car to take the stand.
How rude of me: introductions first. RE67 XMY is a new FK8-gen Civic Type R in the top-spec ‘GT’ trim. It costs £32,995 – exactly £2,000 more than the standard ‘non-GT’ Type R. This adds the following extra spec: Garmin sat-nav and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto for the 7.0-inch touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring, a wireless charging bay in the dashboard, two-zone climate control, plus front and rear parking sensors. And a rear parking camera, which ought to counter a dirty great double-decker wing framing the back window…
Type R ultras can spot a pricier ‘GT’ by the red pinstriping around the carbon-effect splitter, side-skirts and diffuser. All models wear the red highlights encircling the standard 20-inch alloys.
Like all Type Rs, TG’s Rallye Red (the sole £0.00 paint option) Civic gets dusk-sensing all-LED lights, rain-sensing wipers, foglights, electric folding mirrors, an electric handbrake, digital radio plus Bluetooth and radar cruise-control with active lane-keep assist. Is this a sort of bootleg self-driving hot hatch? Well, we’ll see…
A bit more about the actual driving spec of the car, I think. It’s six-speed manual only of course, and a world-class one at that. We’ve got standard adaptive suspension with Comfort, Sport and +R modes, and a 316bhp, 295lb ft turbocharged four-cylinder engine that claims 36.7mpg and 176g/km CO2 – slightly worse figures than the old Type R, in fact.
I lived with one of those FK2 Civic Type Rs for several months in 2016, and found the first turrbocharged Type R a thrilling but hugely frustrating experience, capable of entertaining one second and suffering cripplingly poor visibility, godawful refinement and punishing ride ‘quality’ the next. Time will tell if the baby-bro CTR can improve on that.
