Lamborghini has killed off its SC63 Hypercar, now won’t race in IMSA either

Because it’s too complex and too expensive to carry on, apparently

Lamborghini has killed off its mad, bad SC63 Hypercar because growing complexity and expense made it untenable.

Well, the official announcement said it has "paused" its involvement in the 2026 IMSA GTP season, but it follows Lamborghini pulling the Hypercar out of the World Endurance Championship late last year.

Lambo will instead refocus on its absolute core motorsport: Super Trofeo and GT3, both supported by the hot new Temerario racer.

“The programme was designed to ensure global visibility through the presence of a hybrid racing car in each of the two championships where this class is admitted,” said Lamborghini. “However, the conditions on which the programme was based have significantly changed.

“As the project developed, resource demands – both in terms of budget and technical complexity – have grown beyond original projections,” it added.

Didn’t really set the world alight, unfortunately. In its debut 2024 season in the WEC, its highest points finish was 10th at Le Mans. Fared a little better in IMSA, recording 7th placed finishes at Sebring (2024) and Watkins Glen (2025).

“Automobili Lamborghini remains firmly committed to motorsport as an integral part of its brand DNA and will continue to evaluate future racing opportunities with the same ambition and passion that has defined its sporting spirit,” it added.

And no, that likely doesn’t mean it’s eyeing up an F1 return. But wouldn’t that be cool?
