Is the extremely orange V8 Genesis Magma GT supercar a hit or a miss?
Genesis wants to take on the elite: you decide whether it's a welcome addition... or a futile effort
Rowan Horncastle: “It roared onto the stage and left in a cloud of smoke”
Genesis’s Magma GT supercar concept is the shock this monochrome EV age desperately needs. While everyone else hums about the future, Luc Donckerwolke decided to upstage the GV60 Magma launch by rolling out a blazing orange projectile with a proper V8. It roared onto the stage and left in a cloud of tyre smoke.
Unlike some, this isn’t vapourware destined for a cupboard – it’s the opening move in a bona fide motorsport plan. GT3 requires homologation, which means 200 cars – showing Genesis is clearly not playing dressup.
With its twin turbo V8, scissor doors and swollen arches, this is a proper thing. A supercar from Hyundai. Who’d have thought that?
Greg Potts: “It’ll be tough to compete with Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren”
I’ll admit the swoopy Magma GT Concept looks completely excellent, and that a brand new twin turbo V8 supercar is hugely exciting in this day and age. And yet, the sceptic in me says that I’ll believe it when I see it.
Hasn’t every young manufacturer unveiled a two-door mid-engined concept car at some point, claiming they’re about to take on the established supercar class?
If every promised ‘Ferrari beater’ had come to fruition, Maranello would be a pile of rubble right about now. Obviously, Genesis has the considerable backing of Hyundai, but even so it’ll be tough to compete with Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren on both road and track.
