Question: do you care about manual gearboxes in sportscars?
Do three-pedal sportscars matter to you?
Toyota has confirmed a GR Supra with a manual gearbox is coming. It’ll be a new, ‘tailor-made’ transmission for the rear-drive sportscar, “developed to meet the demands of driving purists”. Hopefully developed by a gearbox expert, not a tailor. You can't make a gearbox out of tweed.
This is of course Good News, as manual gearboxes in performance cars are part of the entire experience. Indeed, upon announcing the three-pedal Supra, Toyota said that it’ll be “engineered to offer enthusiasts something that is closer to the Gazoo Racing DNA and will enhance the driving experience”.
Thing is, sales of performance cars with manual gearboxes have long since taken a nose-dive, with manufacturers offering ever more advanced automatic ‘boxes capable of swapping cogs before you’d even thought about changing gear. Some have even stopped offering them altogether.
So while it’s welcome that a manufacturer is willing to engineer a manual ‘box for a handful of enthusiasts, just how much do three-pedals matter to you? Would it be enough to make you buy a Supra? Let us know below.
