Jack Rix: “Ferrari is getting creative in plugging the gaps”

Predictably, the online love for an electric Ferrari is lower than its CoG... and I sympathise to an extent. A Ferrari without an engine is like a 99 without a Flake – frankly what’s the point?

But there are currently 14 separate Ferrari models you can buy with combustion engines, so if you’re not an EV fan, you’re not exactly short on choice. As engineering exercises go, finding out whether Ferrari can find a way to inject excitement into the electric experience is fascinating – and it’s clearly getting creative in plugging the ‘engagement’ gaps left by the lack of noise and gears.

Oh great, what I really want from a new electric Ferrari is to see the batteries first, thanks. Was a Ferrari ever launched with a teasing glimpse of a shapely fuel tank?

I went to the Design Museum a few years ago to see a thing about Ferrari, I enjoyed hearing how the first lot were bashed together by hammering at a sheet of metal with a wooden frame underneath. There was real heritage and craftsmanship at work. What will we have now? “Meet Lorenzo, he’s been sculpting lithium-ion packs since 2021.”

I’m not saying this new car won’t drive well, but I’m already bored, and that’ll be the death of Ferrari.
