What’s your most disappointing follow-up to a performance car?
Reckon you can think of something more tragic than the Mitsubishi Eclipse? Let us know in the comments
Maintaining the standards set by a talented predecessor isn’t always an easy thing to do - just ask David Moyes. It’s the same story with cars, and in our latest Question of the Week, we want to hear your opinions on the matter: what's your worst follow-up to a performance car?
To get your creativity flowing, why not cast a thought back to the early days of the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The first two continue to be held in very high regard - particularly the Mk1 - but the Mk3? Not so much. It was bigger and heavier than its predecessors, making it much slower and far less agile through the corners. The styling didn’t exactly raise pulses either.
And how about the second-generation Ford Mustang? The original model revolutionised the American sports car industry and left the sort of lasting impact that’s still celebrated and cherished to this day. It looked, went and sounded the part; qualities rather lacking in its heir apparent.
But as bad as these two are, they aren’t remotely as tragic as what Mitsubishi did with the Eclipse. We're still struggling to get over how a car went from ‘nearly having’ Dominic Toretto to evolving into a questionably styled, run-of-the-mill crossover.
Over to you then, readers: ping your answers for the worst-ever follow-up model to a performance car in the comments section below, and we’ll string together our favourite answers in Friday’s customary results post. Try not to sob too much.
