This Hot Wheels Mercedes 300SL costs nine grand

Careful next time you idly pop a 1:64 scale toy in your trolley, the bill might be enormous

Meet one of the rarest, most detailed Hot Wheels toys ever. And thus one of the most expensive. It’s a 1:64 scale Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, and it’s delightful. It’s also £9,350, or just £500 short of a 1:1 scale Dacia Sandero that’ll actually transport you (and four other humans) around.

Needless to say it doesn’t come in a regular card ‘n’ plastic packet, though. Rather this 300SL is served up in a smart display case contained within a swish metal toolbox. And it’s not alone, for it comes alongside an IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Edition watch, which probably accounts for a fairly decisive chunk of the price tag.

The car is the bit that’s piqued our interest, though. It’s a Hot Wheels car with ultimate attention to detail. “This exclusive Hot Wheels model was created by the Hot Wheels design team,” we’re told, “sculpted, and detailed by Manson Cheung with graphics by Steve Vandervate and IWC designer Nicholas Schmidt. It’s one of the most detailed 1:64th Hot Wheels model ever created.”

The doors open up to reveal a faithfully replicated interior – rollcage included – while lights and decals are vibrantly applied on the exterior. Smashing it into the skirting boards simply isn’t an option.

Just 50 of these ‘IWC x Hot Wheels Racing Works’ sets will be made, individually numbered and with number one being auctioned for charity by Bonhams, with bids currently up to £19,000. Yep, if you’re worried one of the priciest toy cars ever isn’t pricey enough, get bidding…
