Two unhealthily stubborn drivers are locked in an ongoing battle of wills after they both outright refused to reverse 50 yards into a passing place on a remote country lane in Yorkshire.

At around dusk yesterday, a BMW M3 Touring came to a stop in front of a BMW M8 proceeding in the opposite direction, but instead of calmly backing into a nearby farm gate on the single-track, field-flanked road, both drivers spent several minutes trying to flash the other into an embarrassing retreat.

Eventually they applied their handbrakes and crossed their arms as if to say ‘Well, what now punk? I’ve got all day’, and have been sat stationary ever since.

Although the road in question attracts little traffic, so far 20 mopeds on L plates, a dozen Amazon vans, eight mountain bikers, three horse riders and an ambulance on blues have been forced to retrace their steps and find an alternative route.

Police have dispatched several officers and a trained negotiator to the scene in an attempt to bring the stand-off to an end, although a television helicopter with nothing better to do has allegedly been sighted dropping off supplies and egging both drivers on.

Meanwhile, a tabloid newspaper has offered a five-figure cash prize to the ‘winning’ driver, and the war of attrition has gone viral on social media under the hashtag #NoneShallPass.

A spokesperson for the local council said: “We’ll give it ‘til the end of the week and if they haven’t budged by then, we’ll close the road for good. If anyone questions it we’ll just say it’s for essential engineering work.”
