Whatever happened to the... Ascari A10?

A bit of history on one of the fastest cars to have lapped the Top Gear test track

What is it?

The Superleggera, Speciale, GT3 RS version of the Ascari KZ1, itself a forgotten supercar of the early 2000s backed by a wealthy Dutch businessman. The A10 upped power from the BMW M5 V8 from 500 to 625bhp and swapped the manual gearbox for a racing style sequential.

Did they actually build any?

Fifty were mooted but we’re only aware of one ever having actually been completed. It was a good one to be fair, lapping the TG test track in 1min 17.3secs, making it the fastest car ever... back in late 2007. And it sounded utterly thunderous.

Where are they now?

Ascari went bust in 2010, though the founder’s race resort in Spain still remains active today. The former Ascari factory in Banbury, Oxfordshire might be cursed: it’s since been occupied by the ill-fated Manor and Marussia F1 teams, and today’s perpetual strugglers, Haas.
