MG is bringing this seven-seat PHEV to the UK, and it’s cheap
At £34,205 the S9 PHEV will significantly undercut its rivals from Jaecoo and Chery
There’s a price war brewing in the admittedly rather niche seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUV market, and perhaps unsurprisingly it’s the Chinese carmakers that are leading the way.
You see, this is the new MG S9 PHEV, and at £34,205 it undercuts the similarly-sized Chery Tiggo 9 by almost £9,000. For reference, it’s also very nearly £12k cheaper than a plug-in hybrid Peugeot 5008. Yeesh.
The big MG will use the plug-in hybrid setup from the smaller HS, which means a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine combined with an electric motor and a 24.7kWh battery. We’re told that’ll allow for 62-miles of all-electric range. Slightly less than the 91 miles claimed by the Chery, but with a slightly smaller battery there’s more interior space in the MG.
You’re looking at more than 1,000 litres of boot space when just five seats are occupied, and there’s still 332 litres available when seven people are on board. That’s almost as much room as you’d get in a VW Polo.
Looks like the big MG will get a black moustache much like the one on the Ferrari 12Cilindri and F80 too, so that’s got to be worth something. We’re told that prices will top out at £36,945.
Standard kit will also include ‘leather-style upholstery’, a panoramic sunroof and heated, ventilated and massaging seats. Order books are apparently open now, and we’ll see full specs later this month.
