What should I be paying?
Even the top 25d is fuel-efficient for a crossover, thanks to new-gen powertrains, clever aero features and comparatively light weight. BMW claim 55.4mpg and 133g/km of CO2, which isn’t bad for something that does 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds. Eco champions will want the 18d however, which with 2wd and little wheels manages 68.9mpg and 109g/km. The big selling 20d still does 58.9mpg, and from the petrols you’re looking at mid-forties. BMWs are closer than most when it comes achieving claimed MPG figures, too, but you should nonetheless take these figures with a pinch of salt. In a recent test, we got 42mpg from an auto X1 20d M Sport. Better than we managed from an equivalent E-Pace, XC40 or DS 7 – but still some way south of the near-60mpg BMW promises. Cest la vie.
