Buying

What should I be paying?

We’ll start with the saloon, which starts at £34,015 in 181bhp, 34-mile e-range, 10.1kWh battery guise. It’s £37,015 for the 209bhp, 64-mile e-range, 19kWh battery version.

The estate is about a grand extra like for like, starting at £35,015 for the base version and costing £38,015 for the upper one.

On finance BYD quotes £345 for the saloon, £355 for the estate, That’s on a four-year contract with a five grand deposit and 10,000-mile annual limit. You might be able to find cheaper if you shop around.

Oh, and the Seal-with-no-petrol-engine – available in saloon form only, remember – is about £11k more expensive. Such is the cost of going for a pure EV.

What’s the kit list like?

It gets two trims, Boost (less power/e-range, smaller battery) and Comfort (more power/e-range, bigger battery). The former gets 17in alloys, LED head and tail-lights, 8.8in instrument panel, 12.8in touchscreen, smartphone pairing, rear parking sensors and camera, and – yay! – all those active safety systems. Wait, not yay!

The latter throws in 18in alloys, a panoramic sunroof, tinted rear windows, a 15.6in touchscreen, heated steering wheel and ventilated seats, a better sound system (in the shape of two extra speakers), wireless phone charging, ambient lighting, front parking sensors and a 360-degree camera. And faster charging, remember.

What’s the best spec?

If you've got your heart set on a Seal 6 - and are you really, really sure about that? - the more powerful and rangier Comfort is the one to go for. More, er, creature comforts too, like the heated steering wheel and seats. No brainer to get the estate, because not only does it look cooler, but it's also more practical and only costs marginally more.

It also gets a fairly generous warranty: six years or 93,750 miles for the whole car, eight years or 155,000 miles for the battery.
