Interior

What is it like on the inside?

The Expedition’s cabin is as spacious as one would expect it to be, providing 171.8 cu ft of passenger volume and 22.9 cu ft of storage, or a maximum of 108.5 cu ft of cargo space with the second and third rows tucked away. A “max” version of all trims apart from Tremor extends the cabin by nearly a foot, and thus increases these numbers respectively. A three-seat bench comes standard for the second row but two simple captain’s chairs are available as an upgrade. These seats also benefit from an available device holder mounted to the backs of the first row to accommodate tablets or phones.

Up front, the dashboard is chunky-looking and a mix of functional buttons matched by the 15.5in touchscreen, with the 24in digital display further up on the driver’s side. Since we’re here, we need to make one more Navigator comparison. Presumably for the sake of having a sleek, stylish interior, the Navigator hides away some common functions like the mirror controls and even air vent positioning within a touchscreen or driver display menu. Thankfully, these simple features remain as they should in the Expedition, and adjustments can be made normally without distraction or much of a second thought at all. Funny how that works.

Got that off your chest, did you?

Look, we like innovation and neat designs but let air vents be air vents. You want to over-engineer a common feature like that? Just copy Volvo. Ford should still have their number somewhere.

How about the technology?

To start, the 24in driver display is - and we promise this is the last comparison - half of the 48in wraparound display found in the Navigator, but it also shows how frivolous the wraparound screen is. Not having double the real estate means the presented information is concise and thus fits neatly into the space provided. 24 inches is a lot, after all.

On the topic of screens, the google-powered software includes maps and a number of other apps included in the Google Play store, including some games. Those along with video streaming can be viewed in park on either of the provided displays, further expanding the Expedition’s capabilities as a place to spend time in beyond the drive. Ford also includes a number of safety features like pre-collision alerts lane-keep assist, pro-trailer backup and hitch assist, and lots more.
