What is it like on the inside?

In the same way it went to town on the exterior look, Hummer also spent plenty of time sweating the details on the inside of the HEV. The Apollo 11 moonshot theme is everywhere you look.

There are Sea of Tranquility (where the lunar module touched down) grilles on the door speakers; heat-shield like gold anodizing on the dash details; a lunar surface pattern on the floor mats; and full science fiction-style graphics on the central control screen designed by Perception, the company who does the same work for Marvel.

The black, grey and gold interior colour palette was also inspired by the original Apollo lunar roving vehicle, for which, pub fact, GM supplied the wheels, motors and suspension. To complete the space theme inside, there are also detachable Infinity Roof panels – which can be neatly stored in the front boot – giving the driver and passenger a clear view of the sky – and space beyond.

Other neat details include the iconography on the central control screen. Apart from being able to designate some of the quite cheeky supplied icons to functions of your choosing, there will soon be a possibility to upload your own artwork, too. So the possibilities are endless – NFTs for your dash? They could be a thing soon.

Away from all the clever detailing the quality, fit and finish is excellent. The trucks we drove had been through a gruelling on/off road programme many times before we drove them and there still weren't any squeaks or rattles. One development truck has apparently already racked up 70,000 miles and is still looking and driving good.

In terms of interior space, there is none of the H1’s hugely compromised layout here thanks to a fully flat floor which doesn’t contain a huge transmission. There are a full five seats plus pockets, cubbies and cupholders galore. The rear glass acts like a regular window adding an extra level of airflow. So it feels spacious even when fully loaded.

At the other end of the HEV, a MultiPro tailgate, complete with inbuilt rear steps and a Bluetooth all-weather speaker system, is fitted as standard.
