Buying

What should I be paying?

Since it’s Nissan’s only truck, the company’s made damn sure the Frontier’s got enough configurations to cover a multitude of use-cases. As such, there’s a staggering list of trims and packages to consider when shopping. Specifically, there are seven 4x2 models and eight 4x4 versions.

At the very low end, the bare-bones entry Frontier is the RWD King Cab S, which starts at $32,150. At the very end – the final Frontier, if you will – sits the Crew Cab Pro-4X long bed, which is everything the Frontier offers, $42,370.

From there, convenience packages start to float the bottom line higher and higher. For instance, the $2,190 pro convenience package adds a spray-on bedliner, heated front seats, 120V outlets for the bed and rear console, remote start, surround-view cameras and wireless charging. A further pro premium pack adds a 10-speaker audio system by Fender, sunroof, traffic sign recognition and leather seats. At the end of the day, a fully loaded Frontier doesn’t leave the lot under $50,000.

For our money, the 4x4 Crew Cab SV short bed seems like the smart way to go. All the Pro-4X stuff is great and all, but if we’re talking daily duties with the occasional long weekend, that would surely do the trick, and it starts at $39,490.

There’s some flexibility here, too, as the long wheelbase doesn’t add too much more to the asking price, and there’s also a ‘Dark Armor’ trim if you want your Nissan to look like your day job is tending to Bruce Wayne’s vast estate.

As far as alternatives, we’ve mentioned the Ford Ranger plenty of times here, and its XLT version comes in at $35,375, though Lariat and Raptor versions get expectedly pricey. Toyota’s Tacoma is another top contender, with the TRD models – the most off-road ready – start at $38,735, and the price goes up rapidly from there. Though the Taco’s proven to be tough to beat. Also we fit in all of these without issue.
