Rotten Apple

The saving grace for the Civic’s appalling infotainment touchscreen is, in this GT model, standard Apple CarPlay.

So I can just use XXL iOS and never have to bother with Honda’s interface, right? Nope. Fifty per cent of the times I connect my phone to the car via cable, it doesn’t recognise its presence. “No device connected,” it protests. Stop. Switch off engine. Open and close door. Reconnect phone. Try again. That appears to cure it, but it’s hardly convenient. And since CarPlay demands a cable connection, the wireless charging bay is often redundant – Bluetooth connections only. When I use it, my iPhone gets alarmingly hot and lights up when the Civic accelerates. And brakes. Quite often, then.
