The long-promised electric Ford Puma is now on the prowl
And it’s called Jenny. Wait, no… Gen-E
Two-and-a-half years after Ford announced an electric version of the very popular and very excellent Puma crossover, the day has finally come: say howdyado to the Ford Puma Gen-E.
And straight away you can tell that Things have Occurred. The grille has been filled in Mustang Mach-E style, and Ford has handed it unique alloy wheels to mark out its electric status. But beyond that? Not a lot has changed.
Inside the Puma Gen-E gets a raised centre console - made possible by the lack of gear lever and handbrake - containing more storage, a wireless phone charger and a sliding armrest. Because elbow comfort is a top priority.
That also means you get a drive selector, which Ford has chosen to locate behind the steering wheel. One-pedal driving is offered if you fancy it.
Meanwhile it features the latest version of Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system, compatible with both Apple and Android smartphones of course and running Alexa voice assistance.
‘Alexa, tell me about the Gen-E’s powertrain.’ ‘Okay [awkwardly long pause]... the Ford Puma Gen-E uses a single front e-motor generating 168bhp and 214lb ft, making it capable of 0-62mph in eight seconds and a top speed of 99mph.’ Hmm, so faster than the petrol car, then.
Apparently the motor is fed by a 53.8kWh battery, with Ford promising 234 miles of range and 10-80 per cent top up times of 23 minutes at its peak charging rate of 100kW.
All in you’re looking at a minimum kerbweight of 1,538kg; a couple of hundred kilos heavier than the ICE mild hybrid version we know and love.
Happily though the introduction of all that e-gubbins hasn’t eaten up too much bootspace: 574 litres is actually more than the standard Puma, giving Ford licence to say that its cherished MegaBox has levelled up to become a GigaBox. Huzzah! Oh, and there’s a 43-litre frunk for good measure as well.

“Puma is a success story, loved for its sporty design and driving characteristics combined with unique practicality and class-leading boot storage,” said Jon Williams, general manager, Ford Blue and Model e, Europe. “Puma Gen-E is our best ever Puma, with the most fun-to-drive experience yet, combined with an incredibly energy-efficient electric powertrain.”
Ford is taking orders for the Puma Gen-E effective immediately, with the first deliveries set to take place in spring 2025. Prices are TBC, but it looks like there’ll be a couple of trim levels to begin with. Thoughts?
