The Polestar 1 will cost quite a lot of money

Volvo's performance offshoot prices its 600bhp coupe against an R8 and McLaren

Published: 25 Apr 2018

Big news if you want an electrified Polestar 1. It’s been given a price, and that’s big too. It’ll cost 155,000 dollars in the US or 155,000 euros in, um, Europe. Given the former works out at about £110k and the latter around £135k, the lesson here is ‘be American’, it would seem. Expect the UK price to be more in line with the euro conversion.

Polestar says the pricing “gives customers a clear understanding of where the Polestar 1 sits in the marketplace,” but we might have to rock the boat a bit by being a bit perplexed. Yes, it’s a 600bhp hybrid sports car that looks chuffing fantastic, but it’s also a relative of Volvo that's the same price as a Porsche 911 Turbo, Audi R8 or McLaren 540C.

It’s a car for tech-loving early adopters who want something completely different, then. It’s worth remembering just 500 will be built and that you’ll also be able to ‘own’ one via a subscription model, too, wrapping all maintenance and insurance into one monthly bill, like it’s a particularly attractive and powerful smartphone. That cost is yet to be announced.

Still, £135k is a lot, isn’t it?
