Say hello to the Cupra UrbanRebel Concept

Roadgoing version to go on sale in 2025, minus the massive wing…

Published: 01 Sep 2021

Granted the eventual production car probably isn’t going to be called the ‘UrbanRebel’, and it’ll look significantly tamer than the “racing concept” pictured, but the fact remains this thing is destined for production. All being well, you’ll be able to buy something that looks vaguely like it in 2025.

Cupra boss Wayne Griffiths says the concept, which will be revealed at the Cupra City Garage in Munich during the city’s motor show, is a “radical interpretation of the company’s urban electric car, due to be launched in 2025”.

“This racing concept gives an idea of the design language of the future street-car and will inspire its creation,” he says. It’s to be based on the VW Group’s so-called ‘MEB Short’ platform, which will also underpin entry-level EVs from Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi.

“The urban electric car is a key strategic project not only for our company, but also for the Volkswagen Group, as our aim is to produce more than 500,000 urban electric cars per year in Martorell for different Group brands,” says Griffiths.

The concept is 4,080mm long, 1,795mm wide and 1,444mm tall – about the same size as a Volkswagen Polo – and has the equivalent of 429bhp. Cupra claims it can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in (a no doubt theoretical) 3.2 seconds. There’s no way the production car is going to be that fast, sorry.
